The Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport is located in Cusco City, the biggest touristic attraction in Peru. It receives flights from several parts of Peru and some international flights. Its slopes are completely paved. Today it operates under a limited schedule of flights because of its dangerous location, located in the middle of the city. Despite that more than 1 700 000 people passing through the airport annually.

It was named like that in honor to the Peruvian pilot Alejandro Velasco Astete who was the first person to fly across the Andes in 1925. He made a flight from Lima to Cusco. The same years, in a flight demonstration in the city of Puno lost control of his plane and avoided crashing into spectators, lost altitude and died on impact.
The airport is the main gateway to the city of Cusco, which is an important center of the South American tourist circuit, and it is a mandatory point of passage to get to the Santuary of Machu Picchu. The airport has the highest airflow in the south of Peru.
Curiously, for being in the major touristic city, the North American company “American Airlines” made direct flights to Cusco from the United States without touching the Lima Airport and soon failed for not responding to financial expectations.
It has often spoken about the new airport to be constructed on the outskirts of Cusco, in the area of Chinchero to replace the current airport , but it has not yet been able to realize this project due to lack of financial resources and controversy for the location, and to build the airport in this location would destroy an important part of the natural surroundings of Cusco, which is the Plato of Chinchero.
